Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra is a mosque located in the Ajmer City, Rajasthan. Adhai Din ka Jhonpra is one of the oldest mosques in India. This place was a Sanskrit college but after Mohammad Ghori victory over Prithviraj Chauhan. He ordered his commander Qutub-ud-Din Aibak to build this mosque in 60 hours (2.5 days or Adhai Din) to offer prayers in the new mosque on his way back home.

It was beautifuly designed by Abu Bakr of Herat in Iran. Adhai Din ka Jhonpra was built in 1199 CE and further beautification was done by Iltutmish in 1213 CE. The British-era Oriental Scholar James Tod visited the mosque in the year 1891 and mentioned it in his book “Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan”.

This complex was used as a mosque in the 19th Century. After the independence, the structure was taken over by the Archaeological Survey of India. This complex is square with sides having 259 feet which are larger Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque of Delhi.

The actual mosque is located in the west, while the north side faces a hill rock and on the other two sides there are two entry gates. Earlier there are 344 pillars in the whole building but only 70 pillars remain standing now. These pillars having carvings of Hindu deities and most of are distorted. It is believed that Iltumish beautified it with seven arch screens by 1230. It is considered to be the architecturally most notable feature of the mosque. The main central arch is accompanied by two small grooved minarets.
The opening times are 7 AM to 6 PM
There is no entry fee.
