Sariska is one of the few remaining pockets of forest in the Aravalli mountain range and the area now covers 557.57 km2 as the core area. The reserve has been under Project Tiger since 1979 and before that since 1955, a small wildlife sanctuary.

The forest is hilly with two extensive plateaus like topography i.e. Kankwari and Kiraska and a wide valley starting at Baran Tal Gate and running south to Thanagazi. At the northeastern corner, just off the road between Alwar Sariska is the Siliserh Lake. Alwar though game viewing and the lake area is poor, crocodiles are often seen and during the winter there are so many migrant birds of water.

At Sariska National Park opposite to Baran Tal Gate of the reserve is a magnificent palace build in 1902 by King of Alwar Maharaja Jai Singh, As a base for his elaborate shoots. The low average rainfall of 54 cm, becomes a major limiting factor for the animals. Forest Department has provided several artificial water holes along the main roads that provided several artificial water holes along the main roads that attract the animals and tourists who can watch the wildlife easily during morning and evening times.

The dry open deciduous and thorny forests assist in an even increasing population of ungulates like sambhar, nilgai, chinkara, char-Singha, and chital.

The bird fauna is also very rich that includes shirks, parakeet, gray partridge, golden wood peacker, peafowl, owls, cresented serpent eagle treepies and bulbul.
